INUIT SILA has been working as a campaign for the Greenlandic seal hunters since 2012, with the aim to re-establish the market access of Greenlandic sealskin, which has dropped dramatically since EU began working on the seal product ban in 2006 (Regulation EC, NO 1007/2009).

The campaign INUIT SILA is financially supported by the Government of Greenland, and has through the last couple of years established itself as a solid campaign organisation, with close connections to both market players and the political scene. Rooted in the Greenlandic hunter organisation KNAPK (Hunters and Fishermen's association in Greenland) and with a strong communication platform in Denmark, we have taken the first steps on a journey that will connect the local coastal communities in the Arctic with the globalised market, and gradually improve understanding and acceptance of the Inuit way-of-life.

The next step will be to establish INUIT SILA as an NGO working for the interest of all Inuit seal hunters. The organisation will at first be established in Nuuk, Greenland and Copenhagen, Denmark with the perspective of including partners from all regions with Inuit seal hunters. Our main focus is improving market access for Inuit sealskin, and in a longer-term perspective more hunter related products, through campaigning and lobbying in the EU countries.

INUIT SILA will represent the Inuit voices and interests in working towards creating a more favourable public opinion towards sealskin in general, and promote Inuit sealskin and knowledge of the Inuit way-of-life.
